Language Teaching introduces
the basic grammatical concepts used in everyday communication:
structure, syntax, vocabulary and pronunciation, all taught
at levels appropriate to the student's language competence.
Listening Comprehension develops
a wide range of listening skills - understanding general meaning,
identifying specific information, assessing the attitudes of
speakers.
Speaking Skills lessons
focus on pronunciation and practising English in everyday situations:
at the bank, shopping, travelling, on the telephone and so on.
Current Affairs together
with the teacher, you will watch news and current affairs programmes
on video, or read and analyse articles taken from newspapers
and magazines. This is followed by a general discussion on
topics taken from contemporary British life and comparisons
are made with the situation in different countries.
|
Topic for Conversation:
through general discussion or organised presentation of ideas,
you are encouraged to develop your ability to express yourself
in English on various topics of general interest such as relationships,
pollution, cinema, social problems, pop music, etc. Student
contributions and presentations are checked and corrected as
necessary by the teacher.
Reading Comprehension: attention is also paid to the
importance of written English. So, texts are studied
from simplified stories to authentic texts, including contemporary
British and other English literature (prose, poetry and drama)
at more advanced levels. A wide selection of reading material
is available in the College Library. Visits to the Royal Shakespeare
Theatre to see plays by Shakespeare are frequently arranged
by the College.
